Collection: Shweshwe
Shweshwe is the South African fabric that’s got a little bounce in its step and a story that hops continents. It started with German settlers bringing indigo-dyed cloth to the Eastern Cape in the 1800s, with a nod to India and Europe’s textile empire. French missionaries then gifted some to Lesotho’s King Moshoeshoe I, and he turned it into a hit - some say “Shweshwe” mimics the swish of skirts or just honors the king himself. It’s cotton printed with neat circles, diamonds, and squiggles, thanks to copper rollers and a dash of dye magic. This fabric is a star in Xhosa and Sotho traditions, shaping dresses and wraps for big days, but it’s also a firm favourite for jackets, bags, or quilts that could double as art. Shweshwe links yesterday to today with every crisp, colourful inch.
